Turning Phu Quoc island into a high quality eco-tourism site

Regarding tourism development, Phu Quoc island has 347 projects with total registered investment capital of more than VND100,000 billion, covering an area of over 14,300 hectares.

Around 14 projects of them have been licensed with the aim of building guest houses and entertainment sites. Detailed planning work on other functional sections has also been made.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung on January 27 made the statement when he and the government mission inspected the socio-economic development situation on Phu Quoc island Vietnam and the planning work relating to investment in construction and development projects in line with government decree No 178.

At the working session, Kien Giang leaders reported on the province's socio-economic development and investment activities on the island. According to their report, the province's socio-economic situation remains stable.

The province's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased by 20.55 percent - the highest figure since 2000 and per capita annual income reached VND14.8 million. For the first time, tourism and services accounted for 47 percent of GDP.

In 2007, the island began building two major transport projects with total investment capital of more than VND300 billion including An Thoi international port and 12.5 km of concrete road between Duong Dong and Cua Can. In addition, the VND5,000 billion project to build the Duong To international airport will get underway in the third quarter of this year.

Deputy PM Hung also highlighted achievements made by the local party committee, and people in boosting socio-economic development and maintaining political security. To turn the island into a high quality eco-tourism site in the future, deputy PM Hung called on relevant ministries to ensure the sustainability of tourism and transport infrastructure development projects.
